If you are going to invest in any type of specialty fund and assume the higher level of price fluctuations then a global technology fund may not be a bad choice.

Just to refresh your memory, my first recommendation for the large majority of your investment assets is a few carefully selected global equity funds.  In that case you do not have to worry about exposure to any particular sector (like technology, resources, consumer products, health care, industrial products, etc.) since the fund management team is already sorting through the companies of the world and choosing the ones which they believe offer good investment value.  From time to time they will invest in technology type companies or any other type of company which meets their criteria.

That said, it is the advancement of technology by human brain power which has brought humanity from the stone age to the internet age and it is technology which will continue to improve life.  For an investor with a long time horizon you could do worse than to dollar cost average while building a modest portion of your portfolio in a technology fund.  It will require an extra degree of patience and the ability to resist putting ever larger portions of your portfolio into technology when it performs very well.
